Hatman

Dear Brungilde,

I haven’t received a letter from you in quite some time, probably since you left England. I’m worried about you and your mum. Is she feeling any better? We borrowed a significant amount of money from Mr. Hatman for her treatment, so I truly hope the medicine has helped her recover.
Today, I was on "duty" at the railway station again, following Mr. Hatman’s instructions. I can’t keep robbing these innocent passers-by, but the debt won’t pay itself off, and we both know what Mr. Hatman is capable of if he doesn’t get his way.
However, it seems this nightmare might soon be over. Mr. Hatman was pleased with my recent efforts, and today he offered me one final job. If I succeed, not only will I be able to pay off my debt, but I’ll also have the chance to make a decent living.
Next week, the wealthy are organizing an exhibition called “Things That Fit in a Hat”. Apparently, one of them joked that everyone should come wearing a hat, and now the hat has become part of their strange three-color dress code. These rich people — God only knows what’s going through their heads.
Because of this odd hat-themed masquerade, it will be easy to blend into the crowd if something goes wrong. All I have to do is to exchange hats with someone. We can sneak in, take all we want, and slip out unnoticed. After all, they won’t be checking under every hat for stolen jewelry, won't they? I'm not sure.
The only problem is that I’ll constantly be forced to run to Mr. Hatman (he will be waiting near the front door) and swap hats with him to save the stolen goods. The hat’s not infinite. But, perhaps, this might actually be for the best.
So, as they say, “It’s in the hat”... or the bag... or however the saying goes.
You must be missing me as much as I miss you. Don’t worry — I’ll be coming home to you soon, and when I do, we will be rich and happy together.
